Media Audience

During the Olympic games, media audience is something that became very apparent to me. While watching the games I knew that the ads were specifically created to be shown to a Canadian audience. This made me wonder what other ads the companies had created for other countries around the world.

For Canada, support, inclusion and doing the best we can no matter your race, gender or anything for that matter is what we strive for and this was very prominent in the Olympic ads. Something that I thought about a lot throughout this period was what ads for other countries were like, for example countries that do not support women the way Canada does, were they included in the company ads? For counties that do not support LGBT rights, were their athletes promoted through the ads? This is something I continue to think about, Canada has been very open to the community and I wonder what other countries have done the same.

Audiences are the reason ads are created, companies must step back and look at who they want to focus on and what their values, interests and goals are and take this into consideration when creating ads. For Canada, with our incredible winters, our Olympic teams are world class, fostering and growing world-class athletes who then go on to win Olympic medals. This is something that companies who are not directly associated with sports or athletes must capitalize on in order to get their message across to these audiences. A commerce that struck my eye was a Toyota commercial during the Olympics. The idea behind the ad was having a car or truck that could take you anywhere. Throughout the commercial, the car was seen braving the snow and driving up snowy mountains to the perfect mountain for skiing driving. Toyota was able to relate to athletes, adventurers, or even to an average consumer who knows that safety during the winter months is crucial. By knowing and understanding your audience companies are able to create memorable and influential ads that will hopefully ultimately increase their sales.
