Traditional vs New Media

While growing up we were always subject to advertising and media, whether it was watching the news with our parents, listening to the radio or seeing commercials between our favourite tv shows, media was everywhere, however I did feel like we were able to turn it off. While looking back at traditional media like newspapers, books and tv, it feels like it was less obtrusive, you could turn it off or look at it when you wanted. When you wanted to read up on what is going on in the world you would grab a newspaper, you could read up on everything from sports, national and international news and comics and many more. In this day in age media and ads are everywhere. 

 In the past, with traditional media it would take much longer for the message or news story to reach the general public, if we are talking a long time ago the story had to occur, then the news outlets had to create and generate a story and then it would have to go to print. This process could take up to a few days due to the time barriers or print media. Now our phones are no longer just for staying in touch, they have become a media source, we are constantly connected to what is going on which can be a good and a bad thing in my eyes. 

 Facebook, a website that was created to stay connected to your friends and family and Instagram, a similar online platform, I feel like we can no longer get away from it. News outlets are using social media more and more thus creating a more prominent place for them on the online world, lately you cannot go onto any social media platform without seeing major news stories throughout your feed.

Olympic Games

Since the Olympic games have been on I have found myself watching the TV and videos online much more frequently than usual. Not only has the Olympic games been taking over my computer but also my social media and all of the print newspapers I have seen lately. In my eyes, it is quite incredible how news can be spread so incredibly fast these days with the internet and media. I can only imagine when the first Olympic games took place, were the highlights and winners announced through the paper the next day? Was there a lag in getting the information out? How did they get some of the most important sports coverage out to the rest of the world who were not physically there?
