Reflective Media Blog

I always felt I had a strong grasp on the new media landscape and its effects on us as society however, going through this course has either pointed out concepts I had never thought about or emphasized other concepts that I was unsure of. A couple of units particularly stood out after re reading this blog post about traditional media vs new media that I have outlined below.

As traditional media grows into new media, understanding the audiences is something that became easier and more clear. What this does it it allows advertisers to have a clear picture of who they are targeting and who their audiences are. Through this they are able to create ads within a specific criteria that will resonate with their audience. In the past with traditional media, it was hard for advertisers to understand their audience and or to even gauge who was receiving their ads. As new media becomes more prominent we are seeing advertisement placements in areas that we had never seen before, social media sites are now becoming a space where ads live every 4th post and businesses are able to pay for sponsored posts almost all social media platforms. What started as social networking sites is now an area where businesses can build and test ads at the click of a button and are able to get clear analytics to better understand their audience within minutes of the ad being up.

Another unit that resonated with this blog post was Social Media. One of the most prominent new media technologies for millennials has been social media. Like stated above, social networking sites have grown from a space where you could catch up with friends and see what they are up to and has grown as an ecosystem and now has everything from news posts, to advertisements, job sections and many more. Because of its growth we must understand the effects it is having on society and make sure that we are growing with new media, which brings me to my last point, Media Policy.

As technology grows so must its media policy. As our personal information moves online we must understand how this may be used. In the past gaining someone's personal information was much more difficult, now companies are able to pull up our profiles that includes our information like addresses, phone numbers, banking information all the way to our shopping habits and interests. As technology grows and personal information continues to be very important we must understand the current policies and make necessary changes to protect the information that is out there and how it is used.

When starting this course I knew I had a good sense of understanding of mass media however, this course opened my eyes to many concepts and more in depth information that I had not thought of. By having a more in depth grasp of the types of communication, its growth and transition into what it is today, I feel that it is necessary information to understand as a marketer. By understanding the different parts of mass media including the types of audiences, whether it be a consumer or a prosumer, media policies like the Broadcasting Act, and many more, is very important. By understanding the levels of mass media, it will help us grow and build products suitable for our audiences, advertisements and ultimately marketing campaigns that will help sell a product.
