Reflective Media Blog

I always felt I had a strong grasp on the new media landscape and its effects on us as society however, going through this course has either pointed out concepts I had never thought about or emphasized other concepts that I was unsure of. A couple of units particularly stood out after re reading this blog post about traditional media vs new media that I have outlined below. As traditional media grows into new media, understanding the audiences is something that became easier and more clear. What this does it it allows advertisers to have a clear picture of who they are targeting and who their audiences are. Through this they are able to create ads within a specific criteria that will resonate with their audience. In the past with traditional media, it was hard for advertisers to understand their audience and or to even gauge who was receiving their ads. As new media becomes more prominent we are seeing advertisement placements in areas that we had never seen before, social media site...

Media Audience

During the Olympic games, media audience is something that became very apparent to me. While watching the games I knew that the ads were specifically created to be shown to a Canadian audience. This made me wonder what other ads the companies had created for other countries around the world.  For Canada, support, inclusion and doing the best we can no matter your race, gender or anything for that matter is what we strive for and this was very prominent in the Olympic ads. Something that I thought about a lot throughout this period was what ads for other countries were like, for  example  countries that do not support women the way Canada does, were they included in the company ads? For counties that do not support LGBT rights, were their athletes promoted through the ads? This is something I continue to think about, Canada has been very open to the community and I wonder what other countries have done the same.   Audiences are the reason ads are created, com...

Traditional vs New Media

While growing up we were always subject to advertising and media, whether it was watching the news with our parents, listening to the radio or seeing commercials between our favourite tv shows, media was everywhere, however I did feel like we were able to turn it off. While looking back at traditional media like newspapers, books and tv, it feels like it was less obtrusive, you could turn it off or look at it when you wanted. When you wanted to read up on what is going on in the world you would grab a newspaper, you could read up on everything from sports, national and international news and comics and many more. In this day in age media and ads are everywhere.  In the past, with traditional media it would take much longer for the message or news story to reach the general public, if we are talking a long time ago the story had to occur, then the news outlets had to create and generate a story and then it would have to go to print. This process could take up to a few days due to ...

Media in my Life

Media is everywhere we look these days, whether it be in our home on the TV or we are scrolling through our phones, media has been able to infiltrate all aspects of the modern day life. For myself, something that has become very apparent due to not having a tv at home, most of my media comes from my phone, computer or being in a public space where there are TVs, primarily coming from my phone. As millennials, we are constantly on social media, whether it be Instagram, Facebook, Youtube or any other online platform. Media has been able to surround us and in my eyes, this can be a good and a bad thing. Media can be very subjective and we as the consumer must understand that not everything that is shown through the media is right or in the right context. We must understand that we must do our own research before believing everything that the media is saying. The facts may be misleading, untrue or it could be presented by a specific company that is trying to persuade the readers into...

Olympic Commercials

As the Olympic games continue it is very apparent that all of the companies have gone with a similar theme, patriotism, standing behind your country and watching our athletes succeed. The ads through the games have been heartwarming, motivational and have created a sense of relationship with the athletes and the viewers behind the screen. Companies have taken multiple athletes including Cassie Sharpe, Marc McMorris and multiple others and have made them relatable and viewers feel a sense of relationship and pride in their National teams. One of my favourite ads through these games has been an ad that Canadian Tire executed, it was done throughout the games. Athletes opened up a large door and on the other side were their friends and family at home on the screen. These athletes have a huge support system and not all of them are able to make it to the games, Canadian Tire made it possible to live some of this excitement with them and it was very heartwarming. In my eyes, Canadian Tire wa...

Olympic Games

Since the Olympic games have been on I have found myself watching the TV and videos online much more frequently than usual. Not only has the Olympic games been taking over my computer but also my social media and all of the print newspapers I have seen lately. In my eyes, it is quite incredible how news can be spread so incredibly fast these days with the internet and media. I can only imagine when the first Olympic games took place, were the highlights and winners announced through the paper the next day? Was there a lag in getting the information out? How did they get some of the most important sports coverage out to the rest of the world who were not physically there? Another thought that has come to mind is in the past, did live events such as sporting events have higher attendance rates then what they have now? Because of the ease and accessibility of media coverage on specific events consumers can now watch the game or competition while it is happening and some would say have...
